Strawberry Alarm Clock - Incense & PeppermintsSince coming to Grinnell, I have noticed a surge in the number of new odors to which I've been introduced. Whereas I may have once had a pallet of, say, x, I strongly believe that I am well on my way to having smelled 2x. In other words, my range of scents has almost multiplied two-fold.
You see, I have the luxury of living above one of Grinnell's two dining halls. Below me is cooked all of the food that feeds the better part of the North and East campii. Even some of South campus venture toward the top of the grounds, although they tend to spend more of their time in Quad, as Cowles is decidedly 'un-hip' and too 'high school' for their tastes. Being juxtaposed, as I am, to this eatery, I am subject to all manner of foetid culinary abominations (I just bit into a vegan peanut butter cookie. Add that to the list of things I never want to do again.). Case in point, if Dining Services are making Buffalo wings today, I can tell you yesterday.
But it isn't just food that has inflated my redolential array. On Friday and Saturday nights I come into contact with more unpleasant stinks than my olfactory is willing to handle. And on Sunday mornings? The bathroom is a veritable smorgasbord of sick.
And I'd like to think that I can handle most of these without breaking a sweat, but some of them I just am not pleased to deal with. A lot of you will say, "Todd, you're in college! It's what you signed on for! Quit being such a wuss!" Then I'll say, "Fuck you! You haven't seen this shit, man! Someone tossed in our shower -- and I'll spare you all the details -- then refused to own up to -- or clean -- it!" Because that's how I talk.
Now if you'll excuse me, all this talk of odors has led me to notice my own. I am going to take a shower. So long as no one has honked in it.
Peace.
-Todd
